June 16, 2009

Five rounds for time of:
75 pound Thrusters, 21 reps
21 Double-unders
There is no listed rx'd female weight- so let's say based on Fran weight, it's 45# (20 pounds less than Fran weight, just like the men's).
Plus, continuing with time trials- 100 situps for time.
5050- 63-63-63
I've noticed the beginner class at 5 pm has been very light. Newsflash, people-- and I want you all to read this-- EVERYONE should be taking that class. There is perhaps a percentage of a percent of people at our gym that don't need to work on form-- and that percentage basically consists of Kim. Last week we had someone try to take the Advanced class who had only been training for about 5 weeks... Guys, we need to recalibrate. Listen up. Crossfit is a SKILL, it's not like going to the globo gym and working machines in which you strap yourself in and your movement is isolated. Did you know that Russian Olympic weightlifters, when they first begin training, practice with a PVC pipe for between 3-5 YEARS before ever lifting any weight? How many of you don't have pullups yet? How many get shrieked at to keep their backs straight, weight in their heels, etc. etc. Come to the beginner class. You should WANT to come to that class to get better at this, particularly if you have long term goals within Crossfit. If your instructor suggests you make it, make it. Don't let your ego get in the way-- that's the best thing about our joint, guys-- that we don't have MMA weirdos with big egos running around (sorry, MMA weirdos). Alan says that if I had called it something else, like "Skills training," people would come more willingly. But don't tell me you guys are susceptible to such cheap psychological techniques!
Now, here's a girl who doesn't need form training... Kris Clever shows us all how it's done this past Saturday.

Unsolicited observations from a guy who makes NO rules here (so please bear that in mind before throwing heavier objects):

1. For the WOD, maybe the gals should do 50#, which is ≈ -20% < gal-Fran #, just as 75# is ≈ -20% < man-Fran #. 45# is a cake walk; but 50# ... now there's some good eatin! (Actually, without going into math theory, I think you can see why % might be a desireable scaling measure. But Dr. J makes the rules, not me! This is just unsolicited morningosity. So keep moving, keep moving ...)

2. Situps: on GHD, or strictly on abmat? Frankly, I'm faster on the GHD, but is that really a baseline comparison with a non-GHD performance? Clarification please! :-)

3. This Iranian election has really gotten me up in a stir: who really won? To quote the Governor of Florida "We are lucky that voter fraud and irregularities don't happen in top office elections in the U.S."

4. C'mon: three people in Tustin did the pullups baseline in under 7 minutes? You guys do know that your feet have top leave the ground when you pull up don't you? Are you guys blood doping with Storm's blood? What would Mom say?!?!

61 and 62, done.

Okay Mustafa, I'll bite. I agree with you logic but not your reasoning. The fact is if Jenn thinks 45# is okay for the woman, then in comparison to Fran that is 69.23% of their fran weight. So I think the guys should do 69.23% of their Fran weight which equals 65# for guys.

Jenn, being a woman, maybe a little bias is going on ????

Speaking of bias, maybe the guys on Tustin aren't doing the belly button to bar pull ups that we are doing?

How about the peanut gallery talks about the issue that I raised on the blog instead of focusing on math problems? Trust me on the programming- there is actually a method to my madness.
LOL #3 Moose.
And, it's abmat situps only for time trials.
I'm really fired up about this beginner class issue. Part of the reason we did it is because we kept seeing people struggle so much with form...and what thanks do we get?- an empty gym...
In addition to looking silly, with poor form, you will NEVER be able to pull the kind of weight that you can with good form. No doubt.

Yeah, um-hmm, right, now back to the math problem: (just kidding). You're right Dr. J (drat! again!), because form needs constant monitoring and correction. I noticed that my kipping changed (poorly), so I've got to get Steven and Mike to show me again (because when they showed me the first time, I was simply great, no, fantastic, no, freakin PERFECT!). Now I'm slightly sucking again.

Call it whatever you want, peeps, it's off to "Master Skills Monday" for me, folks. I'll see you there.

Thanks for the clarification on abmat, DJ. A 30.77% decrease Jay?! We may as well drop by 29.68% if we're going there!!!!

Jenn, put that psychologist brain to work and call it something like "core skills reinforcement". What's wrong with cheap psychological tricks?

I agree with Jenn on this one, everyone. I hear a lot about "oh, I ALREADY know how to do that," or "Burgener AGAIN???"

Well you know what? I continue to do the Burgener warm up EVERY TIME I warm up, whether it be the one we currently do or the skill transfer exercises that are somewhat more advanced. If it's "easy," try it with a 45 lb. bar-those of you who have tried this know how difficult this is. Or, if you feel like your squat is "perfect" and doesn't need work, start working on speed (or getting your chest more upright, for that matter). Pullups-we can ALL use work on this one! Whether it be the kip, speeding it up, chest to bar, etc.-there's always room for improvement.

CrossFit has and will never be about competing against others. It's about competing against yourself and in essence just making yourself a better athlete. We can ALL use work in some area of CrossFit, and there's no exception with regard to the fundamentals.

C'mon guys, let's get that form locked in and be even MORE perfect than we already are! ;)

I can only make 6pm or 7pm classes during the week (+Sat RMS) no matter what they're called. So, I am a little bummed on Thursday 7pm being an advanced only class.

Okay if you want me to be serious. I think if there is only one class you can take it should be the "beginner" class. Form is everything! Not only does it ultimately let you reach the pinnacle of your capabilities, but it will get you there injury free. There is no faster way to getting you off track than trying to lift weights with improper form. I plan to go to every beginner class I can. The time is tough for me but any chance I can to skip out of work early, I’m going to be there (please don’t let that scare you away).

Thanks for the shout-out on the good form, Jenn! But I have to admit, as a fitness pro, I know my technique is not perfect on everything. But having good form is extremely important to me (for all the reasons Jay mentioned) - so I am always aware of my execution, for sho! Plus, I would much rather have a slower time with perfect form than an uber-fast time w/ sketchy form.

Thanks for always being such a stickler on technique!

Kim had less than perfect form on something? If it was squats, she probably had a broken leg that day. If it was lifting, she probably had one hand tied behind her back. If it was pullups . . . i don't know, bear attack? I don't buy it. Sounds like an urban legend to me. "I know this guy who has a sister, who's best friends roommate says he heard that one time Kim's form was off."

61,62,63 done. Sweet Lordy Mama, don't fall behind again; it blows!!

I'd like to make the Wed beginner class at 5p (I mean the Mega Hardcore Ultra Skills Core Master Conference!). I come straight from work and usually JUST make it for the 6pm class. If my workday is light then I will be there at 5p.

p.s. I totally dig on the Burgener warm up!! :-)

Wow. Alot of posts here. Not sure how to chime in. Um, DeAnna- Funny post, cracked up.

Moose and Jay.....I'm lost, WHAT!?.

AWSOME JOB and KUDOS to Jahn and Lori.

Jenn: Absolutely agree. I Like the beginner class, I neeeed the beginner class, I attended the beginner class and want more(but committed to mandatory classes with daughter for next two Wednesdays, 17th and 24th. sorry, FYI). Plus I like that whole "Core Skills Reinforcement" title suggestion thing. Gives it that catchy official ring tone.

Jahn,,please..did you SEE my situp time??? I mean,,yeah,,ok,, so I was talking to Jesse for 6-1/2 minutes of it,,, but still....I dream of the day I have a 4: minute anything,,,
Hey,,Hey!!,,get your minds out of the gutter people......
